A 1965 Alberg 30, *Triteia*, completes a 400-nautical-mile solo passage from Lombok to Borneo across the Bali and Java Seas. The skipper maintains a 3.5-day schedule, initially planning stops at small islands but opting to push directly to Borneo to capitalize on steady 14-to-17-knot southeast trade winds. Navigation involves constant monitoring for unlit Indonesian fishing vessels and tugs towing coal barges, many of which do not appear on AIS. The crew uses a Hydrovane for self-steering and manages sail trim, including tying in a reef during gusty conditions to prevent the boat from becoming overpowered. As winds die near the destination, the engine fails to start, requiring a manual bleed before the vessel reaches the anchorage. Upon arrival at the Cape of Borneo, the crew anchors in 20 feet of water using a 5:1 scope while navigating shallow depths via Navionics. Consistent trade winds allow for long-distance sailing, but local traffic and engine reliability remain critical variables for solo offshore transit.
