Dock and Anchor Lines - Polyester or Nylon?

¿Qué cubre este video?
Nylon and polyester lines serve different purposes on a sailboat based on their stretch, UV resistance, and chafe tolerance. Nylon stretches three to four percent, making it the preferred material for dock lines and anchor rodes on boats under 60 feet because it absorbs energy and prevents shock loads on cleats and anchors.1:46 However, nylon degrades twice as fast as polyester when exposed to UV light and friction.2:51 Polyester double braid, designed for halyards and sheets, offers minimal stretch to maintain sail shape.0:46 For mooring lines exceeding three-quarters of an inch, riggers recommend switching to polyester for its superior strength and durability.3:42 When anchoring, an all-chain rode or a chain-nylon combination provides the necessary catenary to absorb boat movement.4:23 On larger vessels with significant chain, polyester serves as a long-lasting, chafe-resistant alternative to nylon for the rope portion of the rode.5:37 A nylon snubber remains essential for shallow-water anchoring to provide shock absorption when chain alone is insufficient.6:17
