Photographer Nick Jaffe and Golden Globe Race (GGR) founder Don McIntyre present a collection of portraits documenting the 2018 GGR skippers at the start of the race in Les Sables-d'Olonne, France.0:29 Jaffe captured the images during the final 20 minutes of preparation before the July 1 start, using a makeshift studio to highlight the stress and intensity of the competitors.0:39 The presentation provides biographical insights into the skippers, including Istvan Kopar’s struggle with electronics failure after flooding, Abhilash Tomy’s recovery from a back injury following a knockdown, and Mark Sinclair’s background in the Talisker Atlantic Challenge.7:30 McIntyre details the logistical challenges of managing the race, including the use of a four-phone emergency system to monitor skippers facing 55-knot winds and heavy seas in the Southern Ocean.19:18 The collection serves as a historical record of the participants, with plans for a follow-up series to contrast their pre-race appearance with their condition upon completion of the solo circumnavigation.3:25
