Matt and Jessica install white oak trim on the galley cabinets of their homebuilt catamaran to create clean, finished edges before painting. Because the fiberglass edges are difficult to fair perfectly, they bond the hardwood trim into place first to provide a stable guide for subsequent filling and sanding. Matt uses a jointer to square the raw white oak stock and a surface planer to reduce the thickness to 20 millimeters.0:58 To bond the wood to the fiberglass, he uses Total Boat Thixo fast-cure epoxy, as polyester resin does not adhere well to wood.7:26 After clamping the trim and allowing the epoxy to cure, he fills the remaining gaps with Total Boat Total Fair, a lightweight fairing compound chosen for its ease of sanding.13:13 He then uses a long board with 120-grit sandpaper to blend the filler flush with the wood and the surrounding hull surface.15:26 This process creates a consistent, paintable transition between the hardwood trim and the boat's interior structure.
