Salt & Tar: Ep.337- Proper Water Flow

Garrett shapes the trailing edge of Rediviva's full-keel to improve water flow to the propeller on this 35-foot, ~30,000-pound George Buehler-designed wooden boat hauled out in Penasco, Mexico. The keel's trailing edge was too thick for the small prop, restricting flow; Garrett carved all four corners with a slick, aiming to improve propulsion without sacrificing the existing low-drag performance under sail.23:09 He also explains his deliberate choice to omit the rudder aperture called for in the plans, using the large rudder close to the prop as a makeshift stern thruster — bumping the throttle with the rudder hard over deflects prop wash sideways, letting the heavy boat spin in its own length at low speed.25:54 Rudder hardware inspection revealed both submerged pintles, fabricated from chromoly steel scrap, had lost material to what Garrett suspects is galvanic corrosion, while the mild-steel gudgeons remained intact; he plans to add individual teardrop zincs directly to each pintle and gudgeon.15:17 Recycled plate zincs of uncertain quality had been on the boat eight years and showed almost no consumption.17:58 Beeswax was applied to freshly cut keel timber to slow rapid drying of long-saturated wood before final sanding and antifouling paint.21:17 The pilot house received structural epoxy fillets using a makeshift pastry-bag technique, and the cabin top was stripped of failing planking for fiberglass sheathing.7:07
