The crew of Supernova, a 62-foot Sunreef catamaran, encountered multiple mechanical and rigging failures during a 500-nautical-mile passage from Mallorca to Sicily. Shortly after departing, the crew discovered water accumulating in both engine room bilges, which they attributed to failing rudder post boots.7:04 Simultaneously, the starboard bilge pump clogged with debris, requiring manual cleaning.7:41 The crew also identified loose bolts on the hydraulic steering ram, which they secured with Loctite, and noted that the rudders frequently fell out of synchronization, necessitating manual realignment.8:39 During an attempt to hoist the mainsail, a poorly secured batten slid forward, snagging on the lazy jacks and preventing the sail from being raised or lowered until the crew manually cleared it from the boom.20:01 The passage was further complicated by light, inconsistent winds and heavy commercial traffic, including a large vessel operating without an active AIS signal. These recurring issues highlighted the necessity of rigorous pre-departure inspections and ongoing maintenance for the newly acquired vessel.
