Jerome Rand sailed his boat, Into Oblivion, from Rockland, Maine, to Harwich, Massachusetts, navigating a passage through the Gulf of Maine and into Nantucket Sound. During the transit, the crew encountered light winds followed by a frontal system that provided 20-knot winds, allowing for downwind sailing under a staysail and later a reefed mainsail.2:55 As the vessel approached the Nantucket Sound entrance at night, the crew experienced a total failure of digital navigation, as both the iPad and phone running Navionics froze or displayed incorrect positions.9:06 Rand relied on pre-captured photographs of paper charts and manual light-sequence references to navigate the shoals.10:02 During the final approach, the outhaul parted and the winch handle snapped, though a Dyneema safety line prevented the sail clew from sliding forward.12:29 The vessel arrived safely at the harbor in Harwich.13:59 A Dyneema or Spectra safety line on the boom prevents the sail clew from traveling too far forward if the outhaul fails.12:29
