Eze and Chilu, the Chess Team couple based in Puerto Rico, are searching for a bluewater cruising sailboat after five years of motorhome travel, and this breakdown explains their criteria and the market logic behind each choice.0:09

They favor catamarans for habitability and shallow draft but are looking primarily at monohulls due to price.9:20 Their target is a fiberglass production sailboat around 40 feet, built from 2005 onward, with a double helm — a configuration they associate with wider beam, better deck space, and more comfortable cockpit layout.16:28 Preferred builders are Beneteau (specifically the Oceanis line), Jeanneau, and Dufour from France, plus Hunter and Catalina from the U.S. market, which they note offer a competitive price-to-quality ratio.21:11

They discuss the trade-off between charter fleet boats — which have documented maintenance histories but heavy wear — and privately owned boats, where condition is a lottery.23:35 Hurricane-damaged boats are flagged as potential bargains only if structural components (keel, rudder, frames) are intact and repairs are verified.25:45 For search platforms they use Yacht World, Boats.com, Boat Trader, and Puerto Rico's Clasificados Online, and recommend checking local and regional platforms including Facebook Marketplace and eBay.33:00 Argentina's 70% import duty on used foreign boats effectively prices out European production models there.31:51
