Magnus Hedemark, the commercial operator of the Norwegian Sailing League (Seilsportsligaen), discusses the growth of the league and the role of club-owned J/70 fleets in modern sailing recruitment. Since taking over commercial operations in 2017, Hedemark has managed the league under a ten-year agreement with the Norwegian Sailing Federation.1:40 To facilitate the purchase of J/70s using public sports grants, he established the Oslofjordens Seilklubb, which operates as a commercial entity to minimize debt and ensure sustainability.2:29 The league currently supports two divisions, youth leagues, and women’s sailing initiatives, with women representing 35% of participants in the open class and 45% in youth categories.16:16 Hedemark also operates a corporate sailing business using X-40 yachts out of Aker Brygge.6:54 He notes that while foiling classes like the 69F attract younger sailors, the future of accessible sailing lies in club-owned, displacement-hull pool boats like the J/70, which allow clubs to generate revenue through corporate partnerships and lower the barrier to entry for new sailors.18:17
