The Hindu culture of Bali centers on complex spiritual traditions, including collective cremation ceremonies held to facilitate reincarnation. At a temple on the east coast of Bali, a village recently performed a joint cremation for 125 individuals, a practice chosen to reduce costs.14:35 Families cremate only the bones of the deceased once sufficient funds are gathered, rather than the entire body.14:45 Following the cremation, participants visit the temple to offer prayers for the deceased to achieve a favorable reincarnation, potentially as a human or, depending on their past actions, as an animal.17:13 Some seek enlightenment to end the cycle of rebirth entirely.17:22 The site, known as the Bat Cave Temple, features stone carvings and an inner courtyard for prayer.16:23 Construction of the temple complex began in the 8th century, with the main structure added in the 11th century.18:47 Visitors also frequent the rice paddies of Ubud, where locals honor the deity of rice to ensure successful harvests.10:17
