My Engine Broke In The Worst Possible Place…

Cosa tratta questo video
A Wharram Pahi 42 sailing from Dieppe to Cherbourg, France, suffered a total failure of one of its two outboard engines while navigating the strong tidal currents of the Cherbourg peninsula. The engine backfired and lost power, showing signs of low compression when the flywheel turned with minimal resistance. Troubleshooting revealed a sheared Woodruff key on the crankshaft, which caused the flywheel to slip and disrupted the engine timing. The flywheel itself also sustained cracks. The crew successfully repaired the engine by sourcing a replacement key from a local Yamaha dealer in Cherbourg and reinforcing the damaged flywheel with titanium epoxy. The 110-mile passage took 32 hours, with the boat relying on the remaining engine and sail power to navigate the headland's three-knot tidal currents. The vessel is currently anchored in the Petit Rade, where the crew reports good holding in four meters of water. Relying on redundant propulsion systems proved essential for maintaining progress through high-current areas when mechanical failure occurred.
