Managing heavy weather begins with reefing the genoa to reduce heel and prevent the boat from becoming overpowered. If gusts persist, spilling the wind by releasing the mainsheet depowers the mainsail, keeping the vessel upright and increasing passenger comfort. For longer passages in anticipated heavy air, deploying a staysail provides better sail shape and performance than a partially furled genoa, which can pull the bow down.

Boats equipped with a removable stay allow for easier tacking in light air, though they require manual setup, including attaching the stay to a deck D-ring, hanking on the sail, and tensioning running backstays to support the mast. While permanent cutter rigs allow for cockpit-controlled furling, they complicate tacking by requiring the genoa to be furled to clear the staysail. Using a staysail also preserves the more expensive jib. Proper sail management and immediate control of the mainsheet during squalls maintain boat stability and crew confidence.
