The Catalina Yachts 34 is a masthead sloop with a fin keel and spade rudder, designed by Frank W. Butler and built by Catalina Yachts from 1985 to the present. The model has a length overall of 10.5 meters, a beam of 3.6 meters, and a displacement of 5420 kg.2:11 It was produced with a total of 1,438 boats, undergoing changes to its mast stepping, engines, and transom design over its production run. Initially offered with standard and shoal keels, a wing keel replaced the shoal keel by 1990.2:32 Early models (1985-1986) featured a deck-stepped mast and a Universal 25 (21HP) diesel engine, while later versions (1987-1990) had a keel-stepped mast and a Universal 25XP (23HP) engine. A walk-through transom and a Universal M35 (30HP) engine were introduced between 1990 and 1991. Lady K Sailing notes that the Catalina 34, along with the Catalina 36, offers a balance of comfort and support, making it suitable for coastal cruising or liveaboard use in the $50,000 price range for used boats.4:03
