Huff of Arklow is a Flying 30, the sole example of that class built, designed by Uffa Fox in 1950 and constructed by Jack Tyrrell in Arklow for Douglas Hurd.0:29 Fox's Flying 30 was conceived as a keel boat applying the planing-hull principles of his dinghy designs, bridging traditional long-keelers and modern racing yachts.10:08 The boat carries a 3-ton ballast keel on a double-diagonal planked wooden structure and weighs approximately 6.5 tons stripped — well under the 10–11 tons of a comparable modern fiberglass cruiser.8:41 Her history includes a retirement from the 1951 Fastnet Race in severe weather, a conversion from wheel to tiller steering to control broaching tendency off the wind, and an offshore cruise to the Azores.5:14 A charitable trust acquired her, used her as an RYA training vessel and for Prince's Trust work, then undertook a full restoration: 8,000 copper nails refastened, planks splined with cedar, new floors and timbers fitted, cockpit converted back to tiller steering, and a hydraulic-drive engine installed to improve trim.1:49 The boat relaunched on 7 September and is being prepared to charter standard for the following season, with six bunks to support a 5:1 student-to-instructor ratio.13:04
