An Etap 38i departs La Rochelle, France, for a multi-stage passage to Bilbao, Spain, crossing the Bay of Biscay. Heavily loaded with approximately 500 liters of water, 150 kilograms of provisions, and 200 kilograms of tools, the vessel struggles with performance in light air and choppy seas. During the transit, the crew encounters winds ranging from 10 to 20 knots, necessitating reefing and the use of a staysail. The autopilot struggles to maintain a steady course while sailing close-hauled, often causing the genoa to luff. The crew experiences seasickness, limiting their ability to eat, and reports significant water over the decks due to the boat’s heavy displacement and short, steep wave periods. Despite solar panels and a VEVOR 12V-to-220V inverter, the crew monitors battery consumption closely during overnight watches. After encountering periods of calm with only 2 to 3 knots of boat speed, the crew anticipates finishing the final 60 nautical miles under engine power.
