The crew of the 18-meter steel trawler Brupeg navigates shallow, reef-strewn waters near Lizard Island, Palfrey Island, and Nymph Island in Australia to conduct environmental beach cleanups. To safely enter restricted or uncharted reef areas, the crew uses a dinghy equipped with a depth sounder and Navionics to record a track, while simultaneously flying a drone at 100 feet to visually identify sand channels and avoid coral.1:17 Once a safe path is verified, they transpose the track onto the boat’s navigation screen for entry.1:42 At each location, the crew performs a 100-meter drone-based transect to document marine debris, flying at 11 meters altitude and 1.5 meters per second to ensure clear identification of plastic bottles and fishing gear.12:38 After collecting debris, they transport the waste to a local resort for disposal.17:41 The project focuses on identifying high-accumulation zones on southeast-facing beaches, where prevailing winds deposit significant commercial fishing waste and plastics.20:58
