A 20-year-old Lagoon catamaran undergoes an extensive refit in a remote boatyard to prepare for a passage to New Zealand. The owner repairs a rotten main bulkhead using fiberglass, resin, and acetone, while replacing a leaking bronze through-hull fitting with a Marlon ball valve. Maintenance tasks include cleaning raw water channels in the sail drives with a wire brush, replacing sail drive diaphragms, and investigating a suspected blown head gasket indicated by soot and crystallized residue in the exhaust elbow. The owner also installs Flexofold three-blade propellers to improve sailing performance. The refit concludes with a stressful launch from a hydraulic trailer, followed by successful testing of the propulsion and through-hull systems. The project highlights the challenges of performing major mechanical and structural repairs in tropical conditions without professional support.
