Sven Yrvind is constructing an experimental plywood boat designed to steer using adjustable fins rather than a traditional rudder. The build process currently involves joining plywood panels with butt joints, clamps, and screws to form the hull, with plans to add fiberglass reinforcement later.0:02 The steering system utilizes movable fins that adjust the boat's angle of attack and windward performance, allowing for 12-degree outward tilt and neutral settings for close-quarters maneuvering. This rudderless design aims to eliminate potential transom leaks and grounding damage while facilitating a swim platform. Additional design features include a research-chamber ventilation system to prevent water ingress during capsizes, a moving ballast system controlled by strings, and a tilting mast capable of adjusting to windward or leeward. The plywood vessel serves as a test platform for these concepts before the construction of a final version.
