Cruising the southern coast of Nova Scotia, a custom aluminum expedition sailboat transits from Halifax to the inland waters of Cape Breton Island. The crew covers 71 nautical miles to reach an anchorage between Tuffin and Little Tuffin Island, then motors 60 miles to Canso Harbor. Accessing the Bras d'Or Lake requires passing through the historic St. Peter’s Canal, a 19th-century lock system. Inside the lake, the vessel navigates under the Bear Island Bridge and Seal Island Bridge, where the crew manages sporadic gusts ranging from zero to 25 knots and significant cross-currents. The boat anchors off Baddeck and New Campbellton, where the crew explores Kidston Island and its 1912 lighthouse. Departing the lake requires careful tidal planning, as the narrow exit points experience currents reaching four knots. The crew notes that timing departures with these tidal switches is essential to avoid fighting strong adverse currents when exiting the inland sea back to the Atlantic.
