Mads performs three distinct maintenance tasks aboard the sailboat Athena: installing a manual cockpit bilge pump, building a washer-dryer cabinet in the forward cabin, and replacing sail drive seals. To install the manual bilge pump, he reuses an existing deck pump, seals the fasteners with butyl tape, and routes eight meters of hose to the bilge, securing the strainer with Sikaflex 591 to avoid drilling into the hull’s sandwich construction.2:39 In the forward cabin, he constructs custom shelves for a washer and dryer, using cardboard mockups to verify fitment and adjusting the shelf height to accommodate the appliances.2:56 Finally, he services the sail drive by removing the bearing housing with a hammer, replacing two back-to-back seals and two O-rings, and bonding a protective rubber debris guard to the exterior using contact adhesive 281.8:13 He applies Duralac to the stainless-aluminum fastener interfaces to prevent galvanic corrosion.9:55 These projects demonstrate that methodical, incremental progress on small systems is essential for completing a major boat refit.
