The route includes the Muir Town Flight of four locks, the expansive Loch Ness, and the five-lock flight at Fort Augustus. In the man-made sections, depth sounders frequently trigger alarms due to shallow water, with readings often fluctuating between 1.9 and 2.1 meters. The journey concludes at the Neptune’s Staircase, a series of eight locks at Banavie, followed by a final transit through the Corpach Sea Lock into tidal waters. A 30-mile coastal leg completes the trip to Oban. The canal offers extensive infrastructure for land-based recreation, including walking and biking paths, alongside historic sites like Urquhart Castle.
