A solo sailor transiting from Gibraltar toward Toulon alters the planned direct route to coastal hop along the Spanish Mediterranean due to light winds. During the passage, a loose metal bracket on the engine housing causes a cooling hose to chafe and leak, filling the engine bilge with water. The sailor repairs the damaged hose using self-fusing silicone repair tape, which successfully seals the leak after a second application. While navigating near San Jose and Garrucha, the vessel encounters heavy commercial traffic and a Guardia Civil helicopter conducting training exercises. The sailor notes significant fouling on the hull and a lack of anti-fouling paint at the bow, while also performing interior cleaning and maintenance on the boat’s wood varnish. Despite the lack of wind necessitating frequent engine use, the sailor chooses to explore coastal anchorages rather than maintain a direct offshore course.
