Sailboat with black sail glides across open water
Hva denne videoen dekker
A new Code Zero sail from Rolly Tosker, fitted to Tessie for a 3,400-nautical-mile single-handed Arctic expedition to Svalbard departing June 9–10 from Haugesund, drives the boat to 5.5–6 knots in just 8–10 knots of true wind at 50 degrees apparent.0:16 The sail furls on a CELDEAN CXR25 ratchet furler, which locks in one direction to prevent accidental unfurling.1:31 Because Code Zero loads pull sharply upward, a bobstay runs from the bow to the tip of the gennaker sprit, and Erik fabricated a custom welded bracket to secure the sprit to the deck.1:19 A 2-to-1 halyard using 65-meter Dyneema line tensions the luff; Saldén supplied the terminals.2:09 The light-air performance is critical because no diesel is available on Svalbard's north coast, requiring roughly 600 miles of self-sufficient sailing.5:35 Three Raymarine Axiom 2 chartplotters replaced older units; the faster processors handle chart zooming and updates without lag, and Raymarine's Raycharts lighthouse charts load via SD card.7:04 The mast base, which had collapsed earlier, was repaired and reinforced before departure.0:05
