During a passage from Bermuda to Nova Scotia, the 67-foot sailing vessel Escape encountered 30-knot winds and 26-foot seas, leading to a series of uncontrolled jibes that incapacitated the owners.7:15 While attempting to douse the mainsail in heavy weather, the boom swung violently across the cockpit, striking and injuring both owners.9:33 The female owner suffered a head injury, and the male owner sustained a compound leg fracture.10:23 With the mainsheet snapped and the preventer failed, the two remaining crew members were unable to control the boom or the vessel’s heading.9:08 They contacted the U.S. and Canadian Coast Guard via satellite phone to coordinate a rescue.11:23 The Coast Guard dispatched a C-130 Hercules for communication and a cutter to refuel a helicopter, which was required to reach the vessel’s offshore position.13:13 The crew maintained the boat’s stability by steering downwind while managing the injured owners until rescue assets arrived.12:15 Reefing sails before nightfall and securing the boom are critical for preventing uncontrolled jibes in heavy following seas.
