The Fischer Panda diesel generator on a cruising sailboat in Vitória, Brazil, failed after the fuel pickup tube drew air from the tank while approximately 30 liters of diesel remained. During attempts to restart the unit, the starter motor seized, preventing the engine from turning over. Adriano Borchardt removed the starter motor from the cramped engine compartment and confirmed the generator’s flywheel rotated freely by hand, isolating the mechanical failure to the starter assembly rather than the engine itself. He plans to have the starter repaired by a local automotive shop. The vessel is currently undergoing maintenance, including the replacement of a 150% Genoa with a 100% headsail and the fabrication of new canvas covers. The crew is utilizing local contacts in Vitória to explore regional tourist sites while awaiting these repairs. Proper diagnosis of a seized starter motor involves verifying that the engine flywheel rotates independently to rule out internal engine damage.
