Custom-built Simply DC distribution boxes, designed over roughly six to seven months with Marcus from Simply DC and Mike from Sea & Land Yachtworks, arrive at the build site and Brian begins installing them as the central DC backbone of Delos, an aluminum catamaran under construction.6:39
The system runs on a 48-volt architecture.3:44 Six lithium battery banks feed through individual mechanical contactors into the Simply DC enclosures, which house a 2,000-amp shunt, internally mounted bus bars, and pre-engineered high-current paths.5:32 A single switch can disconnect all battery banks simultaneously in an emergency.7:47 From the forward distribution boxes, solid copper-tin bus bar — bent to 90-degree turns using a dedicated bender — runs the length of the hull to port and starboard engine rooms, where mirror-image Simply DC boxes terminate the run.19:19 Those stern boxes distribute 48-volt power to two electric motors (which also feed back as hydro generators), two 5,000-watt inverters (10 kW total), a 48-volt windlass, solar charge controllers, and DC-to-DC converters stepping down to 12 volts for navigation and house loads.20:07 Brian fabricates steel angle brackets, tack-welds them to the forward bulkhead, and begins bolting the boxes in place.12:34 The pre-engineered enclosures replace what would otherwise be a sprawling array of inline fuses, stacked battery-post lugs, and large traditional DC panels, cutting weeks of wiring labor.4:37
