Nike and Flo arrive in La Graciosa, Canary Islands, after a 450-nautical-mile passage from Rabat. The crew anchors in the northern bay of La Graciosa, but a shifting wind forecast—turning south—forces a departure the following morning. They motor 15 miles to the eastern side of Lanzarote, anchoring near the village of Arrieta to seek protection from incoming westerly swell. During the transit, Nike performs an emergency repair on a dinghy component using a replacement inner tube, an adjustable wrench, and duct tape purchased at a local gas station. The pair attempts to organize a hike to a nearby volcano crater, but logistical challenges with dog transport on local buses and high taxi costs, combined with deteriorating weather, lead them to cancel the excursion. The boat lacks a windlass, requiring manual anchor retrieval for all maneuvers.
