Marine autopilots consist of three primary components: a control head or Multi-Function Display (MFD) interface, a processing unit, and a drive mechanism. The processing unit acts as the system's intelligence, managing course corrections and boat handling in varying sea states. Drive mechanisms vary by vessel type and steering configuration, ranging from hydraulic pumps and linear drives on Edison tiller arms to wheel pilots and tiller pilots. Modern systems incorporate nine-axis sensors or gyros to track motion in three-dimensional space, a significant upgrade from older flux gate compass technology. This spatial awareness allows the autopilot to detect the rate of pitch and roll, enabling precise steering corrections in confused following seas without over-correcting. Jeff Cote of Pacific Yacht Systems notes that these systems are essential for maintaining a heading toward waypoints or wind angles. Choosing the correct drive type and sensor suite remains the critical decision for effective vessel automation.
