The function of the centerboard

O que este vídeo aborda

A sailboat’s ability to sail upwind depends on the centerboard, which acts as a hydrodynamic foil to counteract the lateral force generated by the sails. Without a centerboard, a vessel’s hull lacks the resistance to prevent sideways drift, causing the boat to move primarily in the direction of the wind. The centerboard functions by creating lift, a force perpendicular to the water flow, which balances the lateral component of the wind force on the sails. Because a fixed centerboard cannot pivot to adjust its angle of attack, a sailboat must maintain a slight angle of leeway to generate this necessary lift. Leeway decreases as boat speed increases, making velocity critical for efficient upwind performance. High-aspect-ratio, deep, and thin centerboards generate lift more efficiently but reach their critical angle of attack sooner, increasing the risk of a stall if the boat lacks sufficient speed. Deep foils also increase structural stress at the hull attachment point.
