Max introduces Rachel, a California sailor he met on a delivery job, as his partner, and announces the second half of his circumnavigation aboard Elixir, a Swan 37, will resume with a passage north to Fiji, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands.▶ 7:24 Elixir arrived in New Zealand after sailing from the UK via the Bay of Biscay, Spain, Portugal, the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, Colombia, Panama, a year along the Central American coast to Mexico, and eight months crossing the Pacific through French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Samoa, and Tonga — roughly half a circumnavigation with 50-plus crew members.▶ 2:01 On arrival, the boat needed a full refit: the engine was pulled, the mast came out, and the electrical, water, watermaker, and cooking systems were replaced.▶ 3:58 To fund it, Max took a delivery from French Polynesia to Hawaii and on to Washington aboard Latifa, a 70-foot Fife — where he met Rachel.▶ 2:38 The two then sailed Rachel's boat Echo 700 miles from New Zealand's South Island through Cook Strait to Paranga, where Elixir is based.▶ 3:27 Echo stays in New Zealand as a base; Rachel joins Elixir for the Fiji leg.▶ 6:50 The eventual goal is to complete the circumnavigation back to Falmouth.▶ 7:48
