Building the TotalBoat - Time for planking (Episode 13)

What this video covers

Louis Sauzedde demonstrates the process of planking a wooden skiff, focusing on frame alignment, hull symmetry, and manual fastening techniques. To ensure hull symmetry, Sauzedde pulls a string down the centerline from the stem to the transom, using it to measure and adjust the chine logs to a 5-foot-11-inch beam. He uses a right-angle drill and a stubby bit brace to fasten forward frames in tight spaces. When installing the second starboard plank, the crew dry-fits the piece, drills a five-hole pattern, and cleans out drill dust before applying polysulfide bedding compound to the rabbet and plank edges. Sauzedde emphasizes using a bit brace rather than power tools to drive screws into the flexible hull, noting that bracing the tool against his body prevents the bit from slipping and scarring the wood. The boat relies on mechanical fasteners rather than glue to accommodate the natural movement of the wood.
