A screecher is a large, lightweight headsail designed for multihulls to improve performance in light wind conditions, typically ranging from three to 18 knots of apparent wind.▶ 0:06 Unlike a jib or genoa, a screecher is constructed from lighter material, mounted on an anti-torsion line, and operated via a continuous-line furler.▶ 0:33 To deploy, the sail is hoisted on a two-to-one halyard and attached to the bowsprit, or prodder.▶ 2:06 When sailing in light air, the screecher allows a catamaran to generate sufficient apparent wind to match or exceed true wind speed.▶ 0:52 Proper trim is monitored using telltales; if the inner telltales stall, the sheet requires tensioning, while flapping outer telltales indicate the sail should be eased.▶ 7:34 Because the sail is lightweight, it should be stowed in a dry locker when not in use to prevent UV damage and windage.▶ 11:55 When furling, bearing off the wind to shadow the sail behind the mainsail reduces load and prevents flogging.▶ 12:22
