Salt & Tar: Ep.302- Stitching the First Planks!
September 12, 2024 · 19 min · 37K views
What this video covers
Garrett and Ruth construct a 10-foot stitch-and-glue dinghy in a backyard garage, using full-scale paper templates to transfer 14 hull planks onto plywood sheets. To ensure symmetry, they stack two plywood panels, tack them together with CA glue, and trace the plank patterns onto the top sheet before cutting both layers simultaneously. The process involves punching holes along the traced lines to guide the copper wire stitches that will eventually pull the hull into shape. Garrett reinforces the scarf joints on the thin plywood with 6-ounce fiberglass tape, an optional step he performs for extra strength despite it not being required by the plans. After cutting the shear planks, he performs a trial stitch on the first two panels to verify the fit. The build, which began in early July, transitions from flat panels to a three-dimensional hull as the frames are prepared for installation.
