Bad weather navigation: suggestions

What this video covers
Effective heavy-weather sailing requires mastering reefing techniques and understanding how to balance sail plans to maintain control in high winds and following seas. When sailing downwind in rough conditions, prioritize reducing the mainsail first to keep the center of effort forward, which helps stabilize the stern and prevents the boat from broaching. For points of sail from a beam reach to a run, a small, reefed headsail is preferred to maintain directional stability. If the boat broaches, it risks being struck broadside by a breaking wave; a monohull is most vulnerable to capsizing when a breaking wave’s height equals or exceeds the vessel's beam. In extreme conditions while running before the wind, deploying a drogue or trailing long warps from the stern can provide resistance against broaching, though these methods significantly reduce maneuverability. Always avoid a lee shore in heavy weather. Practicing reefing until the process becomes second nature remains the most critical safety skill for any sailor.
