Stern-to docking maneuvers require precise rudder management to avoid unintended lateral movement when applying forward thrust to stop the vessel. When a boat approaches a dock stern-to with the rudder turned, the propeller wash hits the angled rudder blade and pushes the stern sideways. This effect often causes the boat to swing out of alignment just as the skipper attempts to brake, risking collisions with the dock or adjacent vessels. To maintain control, the rudder must be centered to the midships position before engaging forward gear to stop the boat's momentum. While centering the rudder is the standard safety procedure, a skilled operator can intentionally use the propeller wash against an angled rudder to correct a poor approach angle by steering the stern into alignment during the final braking burst. Constant awareness of rudder position remains the most critical factor in executing a clean, controlled stern-to arrival.
