What this video covers

The crew of the gaff-rigged vessel RediViva performs maintenance and rigging upgrades while anchored at Marina Porto Escondido in the Gulf of California during the winter Norte season. To improve windward performance and sail handling, Garrett relocates the running backstays and re-splices them using Dyneema.3:33 He also installs a gaff vang, rigged to an auxiliary halyard on the mizzenmast, to help pull the gaff toward the centerline and lower the sail during high-wind conditions.11:48 When a turnbuckle is repurposed for the running backstays, he replaces the inner forestay tensioner with a custom Dyneema lashing.7:04 Additional projects include mounting an EPIRB, installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and fabricating a custom bus bar for new bunk-area reading lights.14:19 The crew remains in the area for dental work in Municipio de Loreto, utilizing the delay to complete these safety and efficiency tasks before attempting a multi-day passage to Mazatlan.5:26 Custom lashings can provide better tension control than turnbuckles on gaff-rigged stays.
