A Simple Solution for Boat Toilet Stink

What this video covers

Maintaining a marine head requires strict adherence to what enters the system to prevent clogs, sludge buildup, and odors. Only human waste and single-ply toilet paper, such as Scott brand, should enter the holding tank. Avoid flushing Kleenex, which is too durable to break down, and provide a dedicated trash bag for all other waste. Seawater flushing systems often produce a rotten egg smell caused by anaerobic bacteria converting sulfates into hydrogen sulfide. To manage odors and scale, use Raritan CP, a cleaner containing surfactants and bacterial cultures that remains compatible with the tank’s biological balance. Avoid bleach, which damages rubber seals and hoses while killing beneficial bacteria, and steer clear of hydrochloric or muriatic acids that corrode aluminum components. Vegetable oil and cooking grease must never enter the system, as they coat bacteria and create stubborn sludge deposits. Proper maintenance involves annual lubrication with synthetic grease rather than flushing oils.
