HULL REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE

What this video covers

Refurbishing the hull of a 12-meter sailboat requires a systematic approach to sanding, filling, and applying antifouling paint. Before sanding, store antifouling paint cans upside down for 24 hours to allow the biocides to settle back into the resin. Use a mechanical mixer for at least four minutes to ensure the biocide is fully incorporated, as manual stirring often fails to prevent uneven protection. Calculate the required paint volume using the manufacturer’s online tools, accounting for two full coats, and apply the entire calculated amount to ensure proper coating thickness.

When repairing surface imperfections, apply epoxy filler only after priming the bare substrate. Once the filler cures and is sanded, seal it with a second layer of primer before applying the final antifouling. Always wear full personal protective equipment, including a respirator, goggles, and protective clothing, to avoid inhaling toxic dust during sanding or paint application. Proper preparation and adherence to product-specific protocols prevent premature fouling and ensure long-term hull protection.
