FUSING SOLAR PANELS - Where do I need to place the fuses? | Ask The Expert with NIGEL CALDER

What this video covers

Solar panels do not require overcurrent protection on the panel side of an MPPT controller because the panel's maximum short-circuit current remains below the ampacity of properly sized conductors.1:17 However, when multiple MPPT controllers connect to a common bus bar, the battery bank poses a significant fire risk to the individual conductors leading from the controllers to that bus.1:21 If a short circuit occurs in one of these smaller-gauge wires, the high-amperage current from the battery can melt the insulation and ignite a fire.1:21 To prevent this, install a fuse at the point where each individual conductor connects to the bus bar.2:31 Using a compact fuse block instead of multiple inline fuses reduces the number of connections and simplifies the installation.3:02 The main conductor running from the bus bar to the battery bank requires its own separate overcurrent protection sized for that specific wire's ampacity.2:20 Proper fusing at every controller output prevents battery-sourced current from overloading individual branch circuits.2:31
