What this video covers

Guy deBoer, the 70-year-old skipper of the boat Spirit, withdrew from the 2026 Golden Globe Race after discovering a structural failure in his port aft D1 chain plate. The issue originated from a previous accident in Fuentamentura four years prior, where the vessel went onto the rocks. Despite reinforcing the area, deBoer observed the abnormality worsening during the initial leg of the race. After consulting with co-skipper Charlene Howard and reflecting on the risks to his safety and the vessel, he decided to abandon the competitive fleet. He intends to assess the feasibility of repairs to determine if he can continue the voyage under the Chichester class. However, he faces a strict deadline to reach Hobart, Tasmania, to maintain eligibility for that category. DeBoer confirmed his withdrawal to race organizer Don McIntyre, ending his attempt at an unsupported solo circumnavigation.
