DON'T MAKE THESE MISTAKES When Installing Solar Yourself! PYS Tech Talk

What this video covers
Installing solar panels on a boat requires careful planning of mounting geometry, cable routing, and electrical integration. Before purchasing panels, identify available mounting space on the dodger, bimini, or hardtop and determine the attachment method, such as fasteners, adhesives, or snaps. Routing cables from the panels to the battery bank often proves the most tedious part of the installation, requiring careful planning for deck penetrations using weatherproof glands to maintain integrity and aesthetics.
Electrically, connect the solar controller to the load side of the battery monitor shunt to ensure accurate state-of-charge readings. The solar array must remain connected to the battery bank even when the main battery switch is off, typically by wiring to an unswitched positive distribution bus. Always fuse the circuit according to the controller specifications and program the controller to match the specific battery chemistry. If the installation process exceeds your comfort level, consider running the cables yourself and hiring a professional for the final connections and system commissioning.
