Preparing our Sail Boat to cross oceans Ep 414

What this video covers

The crew of the ketch Catalpa is preparing to replace the vessel's standing rigging to ensure it is blue-water capable for future ocean crossings. The project involves stepping both the main and mizzen masts to facilitate a full inspection and replacement of all rigging components, including chain plates and electrical wiring. To prepare for the rigger’s arrival, the crew removed the mainsail, headsail, and both booms, and labeled all stays to maintain existing rig tension settings. They also constructed custom wooden trestles to support the masts once removed from the deck. Electrical work includes simplifying the masthead instrument and lighting circuits, which currently feature redundant switching at the helm and main panel. The crew is using penetrating oil to loosen seized turnbuckles and has removed mast-mounted equipment like the radar to prevent damage during the lift. Proper preparation and labeling of rigging components before stepping the mast ensures accurate measurements for the new standing rigging.
