High Wind Docking Tips: Med Mooring with a Mid-Ship Line

August 10, 2024 · 6 min · 17K views · Nea Peramos Marina

What this video covers

Med-mooring a catamaran in high-wind conditions requires a mid-ship spring line to maintain control and prevent the vessel from drifting into adjacent boats or the dock. By securing a line from a mid-ship cleat to a dock bollard, the skipper can use the engine in forward gear at approximately 1,200 RPM to hold the boat against the wind while crew members handle the stern lines.4:23 This technique prevents the stern from swinging uncontrollably, which is a common risk when wind pushes the boat off its intended path during the docking maneuver. Proper placement of the mid-ship line is critical; it must be routed outside all stanchions and lifelines to ensure it does not foul the propeller if released prematurely.1:35 If the boat drifts, fenders must be positioned strategically along the hull to protect the vessel and neighboring craft during the approach.5:40 Using a mid-ship spring line provides the necessary leverage to stabilize the catamaran against crosswinds during the final stages of docking.
