Good tips for mooring and docking

What this video covers
Securing a boat alongside a dock requires proper fender placement, efficient knot-tying, and the strategic use of spring lines to minimize movement and jerking. Fenders should be positioned high when docking against a quay or other vessels, but low when using a floating dock. The clove hitch with a loop provides a quick, secure method for attaching fenders that remains easy to release. When approaching a dock, prioritize stopping the boat's momentum by taking a few turns around a cleat rather than attempting to tie a knot immediately.
Spring lines, attached to the midship cleat, allow a crew to hold the boat parallel to the dock using only the engine and a single line. For optimal stability, use the longest possible lines to increase elasticity and reduce tension. When tying off to cleats, avoid excessive locking hitches to ensure the lines remain easy to release. Adjust line tension based on the dock type; floating docks allow for tighter lines, while fixed quays require slack to accommodate tidal changes. Always secure lines on the boat rather than the dock to facilitate easier departures.
