The J Boats J/122 is a 12.2-meter fractional sloop designed by Alan Johnstone and built by J Boats since 2008, featuring a fin with bulb and spade rudder hull. A J/122 named *Alliance* struck a submerged object during the Newport to Bermuda race, causing a violent metallic screech and flooding that necessitated the crew's abandonment and rescue. *Alliance* carried 4,000 gallons-per-hour pumping capacity, some mandated by race organizers, and the crew's prior experience with a flooding incident in the Annapolis to Newport race accelerated their response.29:07 The crew retrieved passports and credit cards before transferring to the racing yacht *Kaylee* via its open transom stern.45:08 The J/122E is a variant built in France, sharing the same hull and rig but with an updated deck, coach roof, and interior.5:44
