The Southerly 420 is a 12.9-meter fractional sloop with a swing keel, designed by Rob Humphreys and built by Northshore Yachts Ltd. from 2010 onward. It displaces 11,799 kg and has a 4.0-meter beam and a 2.7-meter draft. Distant Shores TV’s Paul and Sheryl Shard chose a Southerly 42, a similar model, for its variable-draft keel, which allowed them to beach the boat in as little as one foot of water in the shallow, coral-strewn channels of the Crooked Acklands in The Bahamas.1:02 They deployed a stern anchor, grounded the hull at two knots, then lowered the keel into the sand for stability, securing the bow with a Delta anchor.1:44 The crew commissioned their new Southerly 42 in mid-November, conducting sea trials in the Solent to test rigging and engine performance, and addressing a snag list with North Shores technicians.watch They departed Chichester for Lisbon, planning to continue to the Canary Islands and then cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean, learning the boat's systems and line configurations en route.2:08 The Southerly 420 later became the Southerly 430.
