Sven Yrvind constructs the first two molds for a new boat, utilizing particle board to shape the hull sections.Watch He advocates for the use of Divinycell foam core over plywood for vessels intended for high-latitude, cold-weather passages, specifically citing the Southern Ocean. He argues that while plywood requires additional, costly insulation and fiberglass reinforcement to survive such conditions, Divinycell provides structural integrity and thermal insulation in a single material. Yrvind notes his history with the material, dating back to a 1986 build in Hunnestad that utilized a 50 mm Divinycell core for a voyage through the Labrador Current. He maintains that despite higher initial material costs, Divinycell remains the most economical choice for long-distance, cold-water sailing due to its durability and reduced labor requirements compared to complex composite alternatives. The current project aims to complete a 6,600-mile passage to Dunedin, with an estimated duration of 100 days in heavy gale conditions.
