Stepping a mast on an Alberg 30 requires a custom-built wooden A-frame, though the process becomes significantly more dangerous as rig weight increases. After a test lift revealed excessive flexing in an existing A-frame, the crew reinforced the structure using double 2x4s for the legs and added side braces to manage the load of a new, 200-pound mast.0:30 The previous rig weighed between 70 and 100 pounds, making the original A-frame design sufficient for that lighter load.8:17 During the final lift, the crew used halyards to help raise the A-frame into position before securing the mast.1:34 Following the successful step, the crew installed Stay-Lok fittings, high-modulus rigging, and a roller furler.7:28 The project also required recutting a mainsail that was 11 inches too large and returning an incorrectly sized headsail to a marine surplus store.10:01 While the DIY method proved functional, the owner noted the process felt unnecessarily hazardous for a rig of this weight and does not recommend repeating it without professional equipment.8:58
