Sven Yrvind recounts a 1989 transatlantic passage from Ireland to Newfoundland in a 15-foot sailboat, followed by a confrontation with Canadian customs officials. During the 11-day crossing, the boat relied on a sprit rig and a centerboard to navigate North Atlantic gales and heavy fog. Upon arriving in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Yrvind attempted to clear customs, but officials declared the vessel too small for the region's waters and seized the boat, ordering him to leave the country. To circumvent the seizure, Yrvind rented a U-Haul truck, loaded the 15-foot boat into the cargo area, and drove toward the United States border. Despite being stopped by Canadian police for a traffic violation and driving an overweight vehicle, he was allowed to proceed. He successfully entered the United States after explaining the boat's history to border agents. The experience highlights the logistical flexibility of small-vessel transport via road, contrasting it with the regulatory challenges of international maritime clearance.
