Refurbishing a large wooden schooner requires structural repairs to the stern and the installation of a new keel. To access the rotten stern timbers, the crew removes the swimming platform and the rudder.0:47 They replace six large, eight-centimeter-thick planks at the stern to restore structural integrity.1:59 For the new keel, the team joins multiple sections using Inox threaded rods, wrapping the bolts in cotton soaked in sealant to prevent water ingress and corrosion.12:50 To create a precise hole for the propeller shaft through the new wood, they use a custom-made guide rod and a manual boring tool with an adjustable blade, turning it by hand to enlarge the aperture.16:39 The crew aligns the keel under the hull using a string-line method, adjusting its position millimeter by millimeter with wooden wedges and jacks before bolting it to the floor timbers.23:58 The project progresses with the assistance of local shipyard workers, Elio and Beto, who complete the keel assembly and alignment in one week.13:33
